Correction removes damage. It does not hide it.
Machine polishing levels defects out of the clear coat itself. Glazes and fillers just put makeup over them.

Machine paint correction at the Bluffdale shop
Factory paint is a stack of thin layers: corrosion coat, primer, the color itself, and a clear coat over everything. The clear coat carries the gloss and the UV protection, and it is the only layer paint correction ever touches. Everything you see wrong with a finish that has not been hit lives there: swirls, scratches, etching, dullness.
Correction is a removal process. Micro-abrasives level a controlled sliver of clear coat down to the bottom of the defect, so the damage is genuinely gone rather than filled and waiting for the next wash to reappear. It is also the step before any protection: a coating is optically clear and magnifies whatever sits under it, so correction decides what a coating is worth.
We polish by machine, under proper inspection light. Correction decisions are made with the paint in front of us, not over the phone: condition, previous work and how the car lives all change the plan. Every job starts with an assessment at our Bluffdale shop, we tell you before we start what your paint can safely give, and every correction is quoted per vehicle.
The Benefits of Paint Correction
Removed, not hidden
Machine polishing levels defects out of the clear coat itself, so the damage is genuinely gone rather than filled and waiting for the next wash to reappear.
Gloss brought back
UV and neglect leave a finish dull and hazy. Correction removes the dead layer and brings the depth and gloss back up.
Results that last
Glazes and waxes hide scratches with fillers that fall apart two washes later. Corrected paint, washed with clean media, stays corrected for years.
Measured, not guessed
A test spot proves the least aggressive combination that works before anything touches the rest of the car. Removal is planned, never guessed.
The base for protection
Freshly corrected paint is the best possible base for a coating or film, and the worst thing to leave bare. It is the step that decides what protection is worth.
Paint Correction: The Removal Process, Explained
Correction levels damage out of a layer that never grows back, which makes restraint the whole discipline. The tabs below walk through how a job actually runs, from naming the damage to protecting the result, honest limits included.
Where the damage comes from
- Most of it is wash-induced: grit dragged across the paint by brushes, dirty mitts and dry towels leaves the fine circular scratching that reads as spiderwebs under direct sun.
- The rest is chemistry and time. Bird droppings, bug remains and hard water are mildly acidic and etch into the clear coat when they sit; UV slowly dulls the finish toward chalk.
- Some damage is inflicted by the trade itself: wavy buffer trails that follow the path of a rotary machine someone rushed, the reason the cheap buff costs more in the end.
- Correction removes the damage that exists. It cannot change what causes it, which is why the wash routine afterward matters as much as the machine.
Your clear coat is thinner than a sheet of paper.
A typical factory paint job measures 100 to 180 microns in total, and the clear coat is only 35 to 50 of them: about half the thickness of a sheet of copy paper. Instrument makers report that paint manufacturers recommend giving up no more than about 8 microns of it to polishing across the car’s life.
A light polish takes one to two microns. A heavy compounding pass can take four or five. The arithmetic is the entire discipline of this trade: you cannot see removal happening, so it has to be planned and measured instead of guessed. Anyone can make paint shiny once. Correction is making it shiny while spending as little of that budget as the result allows.
A field guide to what you are seeing
Every defect on an unhit panel is one of five things. Naming them is the first step to fixing the right one.
Swirl marks
Fine circular micro-scratches that read as spiderwebs under direct sun. Almost always wash-induced: grit dragged across the paint by brushes, dirty mitts or dry towels.
RIDS
Random isolated deeper scratches, the patternless ones daily driving leaves behind. Honest detail: they often look WORSE after a light polish, because removing the surrounding haze uncovers them.
Etching
Bird droppings, bug remains and hard water are mildly acidic, and left in the sun they eat measurable depressions into the clear coat. Polishing levels shallow etching; deep etching stays.
Oxidation
UV slowly breaks the clear coat down until the finish goes dull and chalky. Correction removes the dead layer and brings the gloss back up.
Holograms
Buffer trails: wavy, three-dimensional smears that follow the path of a rotary machine someone rushed. They are inflicted damage, and the reason the cheap buff costs more in the end.
And the one that is not paint
Bonded contamination: overspray, rail dust, tar. It feels like rough paint but it sits on top, and it comes off with decontamination rather than abrasives. Part of why every correction here starts with a decon wash.
Enhancement or full correction
A one-step enhancement is a single machine pass: it clears the haze and light swirling that dulls a daily driver and brings back most of the gloss, while leaving the deepest isolated marks alone. It is the option that fits most daily drivers, because it spends the least clear coat for the largest visible change.
Multi-stage correction exists for paint that needs more: separate cutting and refining passes that chase deeper defects at a real cost in time and clear coat. Where your paint needs more than an enhancement, the assessment is where we say so, including when the right answer is a body shop rather than a polisher.
And corrected paint should not stay bare. A ceramic coating locks the finish you just paid for behind a bonded layer, and film guards the panels the road actually hits. Correction is where those two stop being products and start being a plan.

Honestly, I was blown away by Trey's Detailing. The effort and attention to detail working on my car was incredible. They stayed well past their scheduled commitment to make sure the thing really shined, and from the bottle of cleaner tucked into a carefully folded microfiber towel left in the car to help us keep it clean to the perfect shine of my car's exterior, these are people who genuinely love making your car as beautiful and spotless as they can. If you need detailing in northern Utah County, Trey's gets my highest recommendation.

Amazing service, they’re extremely friendly and helpful. With some flexible payment plans it made giving my car the love it needs 1000 times easier. When I got my car back, it looked 100 times better than when it rolled off of the wall. I’ll recommend anyone who listens!

Trey was communicative every step of the way and transparent with regards to the cost of the full detailing. Justin arrived on time (early actually!) and was both courteous and professional. My Infiniti looks brand new, inside and out, which is HUGE considering the abuse it had survived with a toddler! HIGHLY recommend— and will be using again.

I had such a great experience with Trey! He was super flexible in working around my busy schedule, and love how he comes to your home, which I really appreciated. There was some stubborn stains on my windows and he suggested I bring it to his shop the next day. The night after my detail it unfortunately rained, and without hesitation Trey offered to do a quick touch up for me in addition to polishing the stains on the windows. He’s also very knowledgeable and even took the time to teach me how to keep the detail maintained. His professionalism, quality of work and customer service really stand out. Highly recommend! 🤍✨

Trey has been great to work with. He comes by about once a month to detail my cars. He’s really good at following up and is super on top of the schedule. He also does a great job of detailing the cars. Super convenient as he just comes to my house and does it in my driveway. I’d highly recommend he also did a great job with getting some scratches out and ceramic coating

What comes after correction
The polish sets the finish. These two decide how long it stays that way.
Seal it under a ceramic coating
- A System X certified coating bonds to the corrected clear coat and holds the gloss for years, not months.
- The cured layer is sacrificial: it takes the wash marring your clear coat would otherwise start collecting again.
- Coated paint washes with far less pressure, and less pressure means fewer swirls: the fix stays fixed instead of being bought twice.
Film against the rock chips
- Polishing removes the scratches that already happened. It cannot stop the next rock, and no coating can either: impact protection is a physical job.
- Ghost Film certified urethane goes on the panels that actually take hits: nose, mirrors, rockers. Stones chip the film, not the paint.
- On hard-driven front ends we often do both: film across the strike zone, coating over everything.
Common questions
Will the swirls come back?
Correction removes the swirls that exist; it cannot change what causes them. Wash with clean media and sane technique, or put the car on a maintenance plan, and corrected paint stays corrected for years. Go back through the tunnel wash and you are buying the same fix twice.
Is polishing safe for my paint?
Done with measurement and restraint, yes. The clear coat is finite, and industry guidance is to remove only a few microns across a paint job's whole life. That is why we test-spot, use the least aggressive combination that works, and never chase the last five percent of a defect at the paint's expense.
Can you remove a scratch I can feel with a fingernail?
Usually not safely, because it reaches too deep into the clear coat. What we can almost always do is round and reduce it so it stops catching light. When a scratch genuinely needs paint, we say so.
What is a one-step enhancement?
A single polishing pass that removes light swirls and haze and restores most of the gloss, without chasing every deeper mark. It is the middle path: a dramatic visual change at a fraction of the clear coat cost of full correction.
Is correction necessary before a coating?
Almost always some, because a coating is optically clear: it locks in and magnifies whatever is under it, swirls included. How much correction your paint needs is what the assessment decides; new paint often needs next to none, a hard-lived daily usually wants at least an enhancement.
Why not just wax over the swirls?
Waxes and glazes contain fillers that temporarily hide fine scratches, which is why the shine falls apart two washes later. Correction is slower and costs more precisely because it is not temporary.
How long does it take?
It depends entirely on the condition and what you want out of it. We give you a realistic window at assessment rather than an optimistic one.
Keep the paint sparkling on a maintenance plan
Correction removes the swirls that exist; the wash routine decides whether they come back. A plan is that routine, handled: clean media, sane technique, on a schedule, so the finish you just paid to level stays level.
Plans run from bi-weekly to quarterly, priced per visit, and the shorter the interval the less each visit costs, down to 60 percent off the one-time rate.
