Ceramic Coating: Professional Paint Protection, Explained
A professional ceramic coating bonds a hard, transparent layer of silicon dioxide directly to your paint, cured in controlled shop conditions. The tabs below walk through what that layer does, benefit by benefit, honest limits included.
A barrier the road hits first
- A professional coating runs seventy percent silica and up, cured into a network bonded to the clear coat. Sprays and sealants run five to fifteen percent and sit loosely on top.
- Road film, brake dust, bug strike, winter salt and UV work against the coating instead of etching directly into paint.
- The layer is sacrificial: it takes the wash marring your clear coat would otherwise collect.
- The honest limit: a film one to two microns thin stops no rock chips. Impact protection is a physical job, and it belongs to paint protection film.

The lifespans are industry classes, not promises: a neglected coating dies early and a pampered sealant overperforms. Which is the point. The product sets the ceiling, and the washing decides the rest.
What is a ceramic coating?
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, mostly silicon dioxide, that bonds to your clear coat and cures into a hard, glass-like layer one to two microns thin. That sounds like nothing until you understand what it changes: how your paint interacts with water, dirt, UV and everything the road throws at it.
The cured surface is hydrophobic: water beads tight and rolls off, carrying loose dirt with it. Contamination sits on the coating instead of etching into paint, and washing gets faster, safer and gentler for years at a time.

What pairs with a coating
A coating protects the finish you give it. These two decide what that finish is worth.
Paint correction comes first
- A coating locks in and magnifies whatever sits under it, so the paint gets polished to its best before anything is sealed.
- Swirls, wash marring and light etching come out under machine polish where the paint allows.
- Freshly corrected paint is the best possible base for a coating, and the worst thing to leave bare. Most corrections here roll straight into protection.
Film where the road hits
- Rock chips are physics: film absorbs impacts, a coating cannot.
- On hard-driven front ends we often do both: film across the strike zone, coating over everything.
- The two solve different problems, and on a kept car they usually belong together.
Common questions
How long does a ceramic coating last?
Professional coatings live in a different class from anything in a spray bottle: years, not months. Where yours lands in that range depends on the tier, how the car is kept and how it is washed, so we quote a lifespan with the package, in person.
Is it scratch-proof?
No. A cured coating is harder than your clear coat and resists wash marring far better, but a layer measured in microns stops no impacts. For rock chips and physical protection you want paint protection film; the two solve different problems and often go together.
Do I need paint correction first?
Usually some. A coating is optically clear, so it locks in and magnifies whatever sits underneath it, swirls included. We assess under proper light and polish what the paint needs before anything gets sealed in; the paint correction page explains exactly what that means.
Can you coat a brand new car?
That is the best time to do it. New paint usually needs little or no correction first, so the coating locks in a surface that never had a chance to get tired.
What about the ceramic sprays I can buy?
They are real products in a different class: a few percent silica, months of life, and they sit on the paint rather than bonding to it. As a topper between details they are fine. As a substitute for a coating they are a season, not years.
How long does it need to cure?
The first hours happen in the bay, which is why the car stays with us while the coating flashes and hardens. After pickup, keep it dry for the first days and skip washing for about the first week while the coating reaches full hardness. We go over the exact timeline for your product at handover.
What is the catch with the warranty?
No catch. Coating warranties in this class work like a powertrain warranty: they stay valid as long as the scheduled maintenance happens. Skip your oil changes and the powertrain warranty walks; skip the scheduled washes and inspections and a coating warranty does the same. Keep up the basics and it simply holds.
Do I still need to wash it?
Yes. A coating makes washing easier and safer, not unnecessary. Contamination left sitting will still etch, coating or not.
Take care of the coating on a maintenance plan
A coating is only as good as the washing that follows it, and the warranty conversation says the same. A plan makes the wash habit automatic: we keep the surface clean and the beading sharp, so the coating spends its whole life doing its job.
